Healthy Brain Foods

April 6, 2015

Eating well is good for your mental and physical health, in turn protecting your brain cells, fighting off mental illness and improving your memory. Oh, and don’t forget about the “feel good” mood that comes from healthy and powerful brain foods as well! The brain requires nutrients just like your heart, lungs and muscles. Foods high in compounds such as antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can improve your brain health in several different ways.

We wanted to draw your attention to a healthy living article by Anna Dickens that was recently posted on Spryliving.com.

This article offers the top “5 Best Brain Foods” to keep your mind sharp, and of course, one particular item on the list caught our attention.

Salmon. This fatty fish is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which have been shown to improve cognitive function.   In a 2014 study out of University of South Dakota, researchers tested the levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the red blood cells of over 1,000 women and found that those with higher levels of EPA and DHA in their blood had larger brain volumes and larger hippocampuses than other women. Although preliminary, the study suggests that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids may preserve memory by preventing shrinkage in the brain and hippocampus, which plays an important role in memory.

As we like to say, Eat Fish…Live Longer!
